Dr Jayam Kannan is a gynaecologist par excellence with 40 years of experience in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She has over 30,000 successful deliveries to her credit! She has been one of the pioneers of infertility treatment in the state of Tamil Nadu.
She is an emeritus professor of TN Dr MGR Medical University and serves as the chairperson of the National Adolecent Health Committee, FOGSI. She did her D.G.O., M.D. from Madurai Medical College after completing M.B.B.S from Thanjavur Medical College. As a student of medicine, she had won 13 out of 15 medals and bagged the President of India Award for 'Best Student in Medicine' in 1968. She continued her excellence during her post graduation and obtained University First Rank in M.D. (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) and Dr A.L Mudaliar award for the best MD post graduate in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
She has presented over 37 papers in international conferences and over 84 papers in national and state level conferences during her illustrious career. This includes presentations in England, USA, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, France, Germany and other major European and Middle Eastern nations. Some major conferences that she has attended include ESHRE, ACOG, AOCOG, All India Congress of Obstetrics & Gynecology and FOGSI.
She regularly writes on health issues for major regional magazines like Ananda Vikatan, Mangayar Malar, Snegithi, Malai Malar and Dinakaran. Her talks focussed on simple and natural treatment measures for women in Doordarshan TV have made her extremely popular among women with health problems.
Apart from infertility and gynaecological surgery, her fields of interest include social problems in women and religion. She is the President of the Free Legal Aid Center for Women at Trichy and has organized a helpline for women in Trichy in conjunction with the Trichy police. She is also a member of 'Arivoli'- a literacy mission on health care. She organizes blood donations regularly at Sri Ayyappa temple at Trichy. She has a strong association with Garbba Rakshambigai Temple, Thirukarukavur, devoted to the goddess of pregnancy and child birth. Our fertility centre is in fact named after the goddess.
